It is an early winter’s morning. You are stood on a cobbled stone path, running through a thin forest of leafless and stiff trees. A thick mist blankets the area, hiding the trees and the road beneathe it’s mysterious veil. To the north there is a river, and across the river there runs a thin stone bridge with only enough room for two people to walk side-by-side along. At the other end of the bridge, the mist forms a mighty wall, hiding the other side of the path from your sight.
Then, to the south where the mist is at it’s lightest and thinnest, a figure appears on the road. He is dressed in only a simple silver garment, with a simple steel blue hooded cloak wrapped around him. In his hand, he clutches a walking stick. He walks silently towards you, untill his face atlast comes into view and you see that he is an old man with a lengthy grey beard and hair. As he comes before you, he stops and brings himself to his full height, being just a little shorter than yourself.
“And what, friend, brings you here?” he asks with a soft and quiet voice. You answer him and he smiles at you, listening carefully to every word you say.
“I see. Well then, if you are interested, perhaps you would care to walk with me?” You ask him where he is going. Smiling still, he replies.
“I know not where it is I walk, only why it is I walk there. I walk The Misty Road, the path through the ancient forest, the path over the old water, the path under the cool air. For it is not the destination that matters, but the journey I take to get there. So, will you come? Surely you would not deny an old man his company.”
And if you agree, he smiles at you, and begins to silently walk the path again, beckoning for you to walk alongside him. But if you decline, he smiles at you, and walks silently down the path, beckoning anyway…
Hello, and welcome to The Misty Road, a blog by Peter J. Gaffney V – or Peter O Gamhna, as I am sometimes known. This blog, inspired by comments from Jeff Lilly at http://druidjournal.net , is all about a journey – a spiritual and personal journey. Recently, I chose to begin to walk the path of the Druid, whilst hoping to retain my Christian faith. Although that may not prove possible, it is thanks to Jeff that I have decided to share my experiences along this journey on the internet, and I hope you chose to join me on it.
